Upper Elementary

Mrs. Haynes and Ms. Walker

April 16, 2018

We would like to thank everyone again who came to the Art Show. Our students had impressive works displayed in every classroom. We enjoyed seeing you.

Literature groups are the cornerstone of our work with Upper Elementary to get them excited about reading. It is a joy to sit with them and listen to them answer questions, debate concepts with their peers, and make predictions on what they think will happen in the story.

This quarter, we have been diving deeper into analyzing the different components of what makes a good story in our Writing lessons. Students received an initial lesson on the parts of a story and have been learning more about each. We have studied the setting, characters, and dialogue. This week we will be looking at point of view and how the narrator’s point of view affects the reading of the story.

In STEM, students completed an egg drop last week. Students designed a “protection device for Humpty Dumpty” and dropped it from a ladder in our classroom. Students evaluated their peers’ designs by observing their trials.

Students also sanded their birdhouses during their practical life period. This will be the final step before painting.

Our Spring picture day has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 18th.
